Inflation in food prices is something which affects each one of us. Some more than others (Since poor people spend a higher proportion of income on food than rich). So just for the sake of keeping a record I decided to put down the prices of some food products.
Prices are as of January 2013 in Guwahati, Assam,
Cadbury's 5 star chocolate bar- weight 26g costs 10 Rs.
Cadbury's 5 star (fruit and nut) - weight 36g costs 20 Rs.
(Btw Cadbury is now with Kraft foods)
Britannia Fruit cakes - weight 60g costs 12 Rs.
(This was recently revised upwards from 10 Rs.)
Mountain Dew cola - 600ml 29 Rs.
Pepsi - 600ml 27 Rs.
Plain salted chips - weight 115g 20 Rs.
Lay's - weight 61g 20 Rs
(Lays not just sells expensive chips, they also believe in giving packaged air for free! They pack small quantities of chips in big packets and puff them up to look full. It makes their product look cheaper than it actually is. But then that's their selling strategy, right? )
Haldiram Namkeens
Bhujia- weight 40 Rs.
Bhakarwadi- weight 44 Rs.
I guess this is pretty much my own findings. I also found the following information while reading an old article from the economic times. So I will add that too..

Prices as of Decemeber, 2011
Cost of a 1-kg bottle of Kissan tomato ketchup: Rs 102
What we pay for tomatoes in sauce: Rs 364 per kg
What farmers currently get: less than Rs 8 per kg
That is 2% of the cost of a bottle of ketchup
Cost of a 60-g bag of Lays Chips (plain salted): Rs 20
What we pay for potatoes in chips: Rs 434 per kg
What farmers currently get: around Rs 2 per kg
That's 0.6% of the cost of a bag of chips
(Tomato paste is 28% by weight of ketchup. Assume 46 g by weight of potatoes in a bag of chips.)
